Why do some symbols look different in my document?

What is the difference between the math minus − and hyphen -?
The real minus sign (U+2212) has the width and vertical position of a plus sign, so formulas look balanced. The hyphen was designed for breaking words. This page offers both so you can pick the correct one.
Are these symbols safe to use in code or file names?
Only ASCII characters are safe in identifiers and file systems. Symbols like − ≠ ∞ belong in documents and UI text; pasting them into code usually causes a syntax error.
