What is RIPEMD-160 used for today?
Its main remaining home is Bitcoin: addresses use it inside HASH160, and older PGP versions relied on it. Outside crypto-currency and legacy formats, SHA-256 has largely taken over — reach for RIPEMD-160 when a protocol specifically calls for it.
How does it compare to SHA-1?
Both produce 160-bit digests, but RIPEMD-160 was designed with a double parallel structure that has so far resisted the collision attacks that broke SHA-1. It is slower and less standard, but structurally sturdier.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The digest is computed by a pure-JavaScript implementation running in your browser; input and output never leave the page.
Why is the output 40 characters?
160 bits = 40 hexadecimal characters. As with other hashes, the same digest can be shown Base64-encoded elsewhere — the bytes are what matter.
How do I know the implementation is correct?
The engine is verified against the official test suite by Dobbertin, Bosselaers and Preneel — including the empty string, "abc", "message digest" and the 80-digit decimal vectors — and cross-checked against an independent implementation for longer inputs.
