Frequently asked questions

What do the four schemes mean?

All four come from the color wheel. Complementary picks the hue directly opposite your base for maximum contrast. Analogous takes the two neighbors (±30°) for a calm, cohesive feel. Triadic spaces three hues evenly (±120°) for vibrancy with balance. Split complementary pairs the base with the two neighbors of its complement (±150°) — contrast with less tension than a direct complement.

How should I use each color in a palette?

A common split: the base for primary surfaces, the harmony colors for accents, highlights and calls to action. Keep one hue dominant and use the others sparingly — schemes give you relationships, not finished designs.

Why does the generated hex sometimes differ by a step from other tools?

Colors are converted between RGB and HSL with integer channels, and rounding can shift a channel by one step (about 0.4%). The relationships on the color wheel are exact; only the final integer display can wobble by a hair.

What is the Random button doing?

It picks a completely random base color from all 16.7 million RGB combinations using the browser's crypto generator — useful when you want the wheel to choose for you.
