Is my image compressed on a server?
No — compression happens in your own tab using the browser canvas encoder. Files never leave your browser, so private screenshots and photos are safe to run through it.
How does the target size mode work?
It binary-searches the encoder quality: it tries the middle quality, compares the result with your target size, and keeps halving the range until it lands just under your target (or runs out of steps). You get the highest quality that still fits the budget.
Why no PNG output?
PNG is a lossless format — the encoder has no quality dial, so "compressing" to an arbitrary size is not possible. For squeezing screenshots, WebP is the honest option: it is lossy but usually looks clean at moderate quality.
Will compression make my image look worse?
Some. Lossy compression throws away detail the encoder thinks you will not miss. At quality 80–90% most photos look nearly identical; below 50% you start seeing blur and blockiness around text and edges.
How small can I actually get a file?
It depends on the picture. Flat-color graphics compress dramatically; a busy photo may never reach a very small target even at the lowest quality. When the tool cannot reach your target it tells you so instead of pretending.
