How are the digits computed?
With Machin’s 1706 formula: π/4 = 4·arctan(1/5) − arctan(1/239), evaluated with big-integer arithmetic. It converges fast enough that 10,000 digits take well under a second on a typical laptop.
Why do people memorize digits of π?
Mostly for fun and mnemonics — practical physics needs at most a dozen digits. NASA’s interplanetary navigation uses about 15; memorizing 100 is already an impressive party trick.
Is a digit lookup faster than searching a reference table?
For a few hundred digits, yes — generation is instantaneous and there is nothing to scroll. The tool also avoids transcription errors that creep into copy-pasted tables.
