How many countries are in this list?
196 countries and territories: the 193 United Nations member states plus Vatican City, Palestine and Taiwan (ISO 3166-1 scope). The table shows every entry — use the search box or region filter to narrow it down.
Why does the capital differ from other sources for a few countries?
A handful of countries have more than one capital or recently moved theirs: South Africa (Pretoria is the executive seat), Bolivia (Sucre is the constitutional capital), Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Myanmar and Côte d’Ivoire among them. This list follows the most widely used convention for each.
Can I search by capital city instead of country name?
Yes. Typing a capital name — for example “Ottawa” — matches that country directly, so the table doubles as a reverse lookup.
Is this a country quiz?
It works as one: set the region filter, cover the capital column with your hand, and guess. Search for “quiz” on the Tools hub to find dedicated study tools as well.
Does the list include dependent territories?
No. Territories such as Puerto Rico, Greenland or Hong Kong are not independent states in the ISO “sovereign” sense used here, so they are left out to keep the count comparable with standard country lists.
